Job titles are really a relic of old, bureaucratic organizations. At one point, they delimited where one job stops and the next one starts. But in today’s flattened enterprises, where serving the customer—whatever it takes--takes priority over staying within the lines of an organization chart, job titles are just so much extra friction. Job titles were also a cheap way of conferring status. Did people really get satisfaction from a new title instead of a raise? Today, employees say, “Show me the money!” or they’re out the door. But old habits die hard. Everyone thinks they need a job title, and for that reason, everyone does. Good thing they are free, which is about how much they are worth. So to test your job title savvy, here is a list of job titles, some real, some totally bogus. Your job is to determine which ones are real (as listed in Internet Jobs!, and how many are figments of the imagination.) Are the following 15 job titles authentic or a figment of the fevered hiccups of some post-IPO CEO’s imagination? Ten free copies of Internet Jobs!: The Complete Guide to Finding the Hottest Jobs on the Net await the first ten correct responses. Just fill out the form below with your responses and submit. Ten winners will receive copies of the new book, Internet Jobs!: the Complete Guide to Finding the Hottest Jobs on The Net. Deadline for submissions is February 15, 2000. Winners will be notified by email.
